Founded in 1905, it is the world’s leading medical society dedicated to accelerating the advancement of global respiratory health through multidisciplinary collaboration, education, and advocacy. Core activities focus on leading scientific discoveries, advancing professional development, impacting global health, and transforming patient care. Founded in 1905, the American Thoracic Society is the world’s leading medical society dedicated to accelerating the advancement of global respiratory health through multidisciplinary collaboration, education, and advocacy. Core activities of the Society’s more than 30,000 members in 133 countries are focused on leading scientific discoveries, advancing professional development, impacting global health, and transforming patient care. Key activities include developing clinical practice guidelines, hosting the annual International Conference with ~14,000 attendees, publishing four peer-reviewed journals, advocating for respiratory health globally, and providing patient education and career development resources. The Society has a strong focus on pulmonology, critical care, sleep medicine, infectious disease, pediatrics, allergy/immunology, thoracic surgery, behavioral science, environmental and occupational medicine, physiology, and molecular biology. ATS has a long history of research funding, having awarded over $24 million in grants and fellowships to 302 young researchers worldwide. The Society actively engages in policy advocacy, global health partnerships, and professional development. It maintains 14 specialty assemblies, 3 sections, and over 25 committees overseeing various activities. The ATS Public Advisory Roundtable (PAR) incorporates patient and family perspectives through 15 member organizations. The Society collaborates internationally with organizations such as the European Respiratory Society, Latin American Thoracic Society, Asian Pacific Society of Respirology, WHO, Stop TB Partnership, and Global Alliance Against Respiratory Disease.
